Tornado Season – How to Be Prepared & Handle Property Damage

Trees uprooted after a tornado and leaning on houses.

Summer can be beautiful in Minnesota, but it can also have some major storms, including tornadoes. Tornadoes have varying degrees of strength based on the Fujita–Pearson scale (FPP scale), the Enhanced Fujita Scale (EF-Scale), and the TORRO scale (T-Scale). However you measure them, there’s no doubt that tornadoes can cause devastating results in a matter of seconds.

Preparation is Everything

Since we haven’t really found a way to battle tornadoes, the best way to handle them is by time-honored preparation strategies. Some we’ve been doing since childhood (avoiding windows and getting to the lowest level of a building), but others might not be as obvious. For example, you should definitely create an emergency kit that includes:

  • First aid supplies
  • Spare clothes
  • Flashlights
  • Batteries
  • Toiletries
  • Medications
  • Bottled water, and
  • A radio

Another thing you should have ready: important documents in case you face property damage. We’re talking insurance policies, photos of your home, social security cards, and birth certificates.

What to Do if a Tornado Damages Your Property

Property damage from a tornado (or any storm) can be terrifying. You might be stressed out and confused, which makes it crucial to plan ahead. That way, if the moment does arrive, you’ll have important documents readily available to help you take the next steps quickly.

If your property is damaged by a tornado, wind, hail, lightning, or any other disaster, the first priority is to make sure everyone is safe and call 9-1-1 for emergency response help. Once that’s taken care of, you’ll want to get ahold of a mitigation company to handle the damaged structure.
