How to Build Your Business Emergency Response & Continuity Plan
By Admin | May 24, 2021
PROTECT. YOUR. BUSINESS. Too strong? We don’t think so. Your business is important and the reality is that things can happen outside your control and damage your property or space.
We want to help you keep your company safe and productive, so here are some helpful tips to building your business emergency response and continuity plan.
Basic Planning & Preparation
First, review your current insurance coverage with your provider to make sure you can financially handle potential disasters (are you set up for business interruption, floods or fire?). To guarantee that you’re prepared for the meeting, compile a list of your company equipment and inventory to know what can be damaged or lost ahead of time.
After getting insurance lined up, make a list of any and all emergencies and threats that could affect your company. Based on this list, you’ll need to create an evacuation and shelter-in-place plan, along with an emergency contact list and a list of local business contractors who can help you.
Once you have everything mapped out, you’ll need to communicate the plan with your employees on a consistent basis to ensure everyone is on the same page in case an emergency arises.
Updating Your Business Space & Ensuring Employee Wellbeing
Planning is one thing, but it’s another to take preventative actions. You’ll want to have properly functioning fire extinguishers, smoke/carbon monoxide alarms and sprinkler systems along with a well-maintained HVAC system. When in doubt, hire a professional to inspect your building or space to make sure you’re up to safety codes.
When it comes to technology, redundancy is crucial. Implement modern antivirus software and firewalls on the company computers and have all of your records and data routinely backed up and stored. If possible, have a generator installed to ensure power in case of an electrical black-out.
Your space and technology are important, but nothing is as essential as the safety of your team. Build a supply kit for emergencies and offer safety training for employees, including CPR and first aid. Also, make sure that you have an alert system in place to communicate any potential problems.
