The challenge

An electrical fire started inside the walls behind this kitchen. Fire in a wall cavity is not visible until it has already traveled, and by the time it was out the kitchen had to be gutted — not because the finishes looked bad, but because the structure behind them had been opened up.

Our approach

The layout was sound, so it largely stayed. Rather than reproduce the original cabinet plan exactly, the rebuild took the cabinets to the ceiling and enlarged the center island, both changes that cost little once the room was already back to studs and wiring.

The results

The kitchen came back warmer and taller than it went in. Cream cabinetry runs to the ceiling with contrasting dark stained trim and island, and the larger island gives the room a working surface the original never had.

Cause of loss: an electrical fire inside the walls. Style direction: traditional and timeless.

An electrical fire in a wall cavity is the kind that does its damage out of sight. There is no warning in the room itself, and the extent of it is not clear until the wall comes off — which is why a kitchen that looked largely intact still had to be gutted after the fire was out.

The layout was never the problem, so most of it stayed. What changed were the two things that are cheap to change while a room is open to the studs and expensive to change later: the cabinets went all the way to the ceiling instead of stopping short with a soffit above, and the center island got bigger.

Cream cabinetry with contrasting dark stain does the rest. The room reads warmer and considerably taller than the pickled oak kitchen it replaced, in the same footprint.
