The challenge

Lightning struck the home and started a fire that damaged much of the house. The structure had to be gutted and rebuilt, which meant every room came back to bare framing — including a primary bathroom that had not been touched since the house was built.

Our approach

With the room already open to the studs, the rebuild was not limited to putting back what was there. The sunken tub came out to free up floor area, which made room for a full walk-in shower and a dressing area the homeowners had wanted for years.

The results

The bathroom came back brighter and considerably more usable. A white double vanity replaced the original oak, the tiled walk-in shower sits where the sunken tub used to be, and warm wood-look flooring and black fixtures carry a modern farmhouse palette through the room.

Cause of loss: a lightning strike that started a house fire. Style direction: modern farmhouse.

A lightning strike is one of the few losses that takes a whole house at once. Much of this home was destroyed, and what survived still had to come out — fire and smoke restoration at that scale means gutting back to framing and rebuilding from there.

That changes what is possible in a room like this one. A bathroom rebuilt after a fire is not obligated to return as the bathroom that burned, and the original layout had a sunken tub eating floor area that the homeowners rarely used.

Taking it out freed the space for a full walk-in shower and a dressing area. The oak vanity became a white double vanity, black fixtures and a framed mirror replaced the builder-grade originals, and wood-look flooring carries warmth through a room that had none.
