Plymouth Kitchen Restoration

The challenge

A dishwasher leak ran under the cabinets and flooring of this Plymouth kitchen. Once the wet materials came out it was clear the repair would reach most of the room, and the original layout had never made much of the vaulted ceiling and exposed beams above it.

Our approach

We dried the structure, removed the damaged cabinetry and flooring, and rebuilt with the layout reworked while the room was already open. Keeping one team from mitigation through finish carpentry meant the design decisions could be made against what the framing actually allowed.

The results

The kitchen came back around a large island with seating, custom cabinetry, and a warm organic palette that finally answers the vaulted ceiling and beams. A built-in dining nook and a reworked layout give the room the flow it never had.

Cause of loss: a dishwasher leak that ran under the cabinets and flooring. Style direction: warm, organic, transitional.

A dishwasher fails quietly. The water goes under the toe kick and into the subfloor, and by the time it shows at the surface the cabinet boxes and flooring have been wet for a while. That is why this repair reached most of the room rather than the run of cabinets nearest the appliance.

Because the space was already open, the rebuild could do something the original kitchen never did — use the height. The vaulted ceiling and exposed beams were always there; the new layout puts a large island underneath them, adds a built-in dining nook, and carries a warm organic palette through custom cabinetry and stone. The water damage set the scope, but the room that came back is better than the one that was lost.
