The challenge

The original kitchen was a closed-in oak layout with laminate counters and a small angular island that gave the homeowners very little usable workspace. Storage was the other problem — a cramped bifold closet was doing the job of a pantry, and it had long since stopped keeping up.

Our approach

We reworked the layout around a single large island rather than the original angled one, rebuilt the storage wall floor to ceiling, and converted the closet pantry into a proper walk-in. The existing skylight and window wall stayed put; the new cabinetry was designed around the light they already gave.

The results

The kitchen came back with white cabinetry, quartz counters, and a large island with seating and a built-in wine refrigerator. A darker stain on the hardwood sets off the new cabinets, the walk-in pantry replaced the overstuffed closet, and new appliances finished the room.

Scope: a full kitchen remodel. Style direction: brighter, with more workspace and better storage.

This kitchen had the bones of a good room and none of the function. The oak cabinetry and laminate counters were original, and the angled island in the middle took up floor area without giving back much usable surface — the kind of layout that looks fine until you try to cook in it with anyone else in the room.

Replacing it with one large island was the change that made the rest work. It gave the homeowners the counter space they had been missing, added seating, and left room for a built-in wine refrigerator underneath.

Storage got the same treatment. The floor-to-ceiling cabinet bank came back in white, and the overstuffed bifold closet that had been serving as a pantry became a walk-in with open shelving. A darker stain on the hardwood plays against the new cabinets, and the skylight and window wall that were already there do more work now that the room around them is lighter.
