Chanhassen Water Damage

01

The challenge

A dishwasher leak damaged the kitchen of this Chanhassen home. The cherry cabinetry and granite that came out were sound but dated, and the original plan had a wall microwave and a run of cabinets beside the refrigerator that broke up the sight lines every time you walked into the room.

Our approach

Rather than replace the layout like for like, the homeowner used the opening to redesign the cabinet plan entirely. The microwave moved down into a built-in base cabinet, a simple range hood took over above the cooktop, and the unused cabinets next to the refrigerator became open display shelving.

The results

The kitchen came back lighter and calmer. White cabinetry and light counters bounce the natural light the room already had, the new hood and lowered microwave give a clean eye-line the whole way around, and the island seats the family where the old angled one never really could.

Cause of loss: a dishwasher leak. Style direction: clean, functional, and built for cooking and eating as a family.

A dishwasher leak is one of the quieter losses. It goes under the toe kick and into the subfloor, and the damage is usually well established by the time anything shows at the surface — which is why water damage in a kitchen so often means opening up more of the room than the appliance ever touched.

Once it was open, the homeowner treated it as the chance to fix things the original plan got wrong rather than to reproduce it. The wall microwave dropped into a base cabinet, a simple hood replaced it above the cooktop, and the eye-line finally runs clean around the room.

The rest followed from that. Unused cabinets beside the refrigerator became open shelves for display, and white paint with light counters reflects the natural light the kitchen already had. It reads as a bigger, sunnier room than the one that was lost, without the footprint changing at all.
